Every entrant gets the same opponent set, which is excellent if you want a meaningful table. The price is that every additional entrant creates matches against everyone already in the field.
That makes the most important round-robin decision happen before the draw: can the fixture you are creating physically fit into the courts and time you have?
First define the entrant
For singles, the entrant is obvious: one player.
For doubles, decide whether the entrant is a fixed pair or an individual.
A fixed-pair round robin is mathematically identical to singles. Pair A plays Pair B, C, D and so on. The pair has one record and one table position.
An individual rotating-doubles event is different. If partners change every round, "everyone plays everyone" can mean several things:
- everyone partners everyone once;
- everyone opposes everyone a similar number of times;
- everyone plays the same number of games;
- every individual's teams are balanced across the event.
You may not be able to satisfy all of them simultaneously, especially with a small number of courts or awkward player counts.
So do not call rotating doubles a round robin and assume the usual fixture generator solves it. It is a partnership-design problem of its own.
The match-count maths
For a standard single round robin with N entrants:

The jump from eight to twelve entrants does not add 50% more badminton. It adds 136% more matches: 28 becomes 66.
For a double round robin - everybody meets twice - double the total.
Convert matches into court time
Total matches are not yet a schedule. You need court slots.
If you expect each match slot, including changeover, to take 15 minutes and you have four courts, 28 matches contain at least:
28 × 15 ÷ 4 = 105 court-clock minutes
That is a theoretical lower bound, not a finish-time promise. Players cannot be in two matches simultaneously, and individual matches vary in length. The circle draw creates logical rounds specifically to avoid participant clashes, but if you have fewer courts than the matches in a round, you need extra waves.
Build margin for:
- registration and briefing;
- walking to court;
- long deuce games;
- score reporting;
- the inevitable missing water bottle;
- and a knockout stage if one follows.
Do the pessimistic calculation before publishing the schedule. "Final at approximately 5pm" is much easier to defend when your model says 4:25 than when it says 5:07.
Drawing a fixed-pair round robin
For an even number of entrants, the circle method generates the fixture cleanly.
- Number the entrants.
- Keep one position fixed.
- Arrange the rest around it.
- Pair opposite positions for Round 1.
- Rotate all non-fixed positions one step.
- Read off the new pairings and repeat.
With six entrants, each round contains three matches and five rounds complete the fixture. Every entrant appears once per logical round and meets each other entrant exactly once.
Software or a spreadsheet is less error-prone than drawing large fixtures by hand, but the circle method is still worth understanding because it makes duplicate/missing matches obvious.
Odd numbers and byes
With an odd number, add an imaginary entrant called Bye and generate the fixture as though the field were even.
Whoever is paired with Bye rests that round. With five real entrants, the six-position draw produces five logical rounds and each real entrant receives one bye.
This is fair in the narrow scheduling sense: rests are distributed once each.
It does not mean all rests are equally convenient. A first-round bye feels different from a bye immediately followed by lunch. If the event matters competitively and you can control timing, avoid giving one player a uniquely long break while another plays continuously.
Rotating doubles is a different problem
Suppose eight individuals want doubles games with changing partners.
There are 28 possible partnerships between those eight people. One doubles game consumes two partnerships and creates four opponent relationships. A six-game social event cannot possibly sample the whole network evenly.
So decide what you are scoring.
If the individual table is based on wins or points, partner strength becomes part of competitive fairness. A player given the strongest partner three times has had a different event from one repeatedly paired with the weakest.
A good rotating-doubles draw therefore tries to balance:
- equal games;
- partner repetition;
- opponent repetition;
- average partner strength;
- and sit-outs.
That is closer to a social "American tournament" or balanced rotation than a conventional round robin. Use a generator designed for that objective rather than forcing a fixed-pair Berger table to do the wrong job.
Choose scoring from the time budget
Standard badminton matches are normally best of three games to 21 under the Laws. That may be entirely inappropriate for a two-hour internal event with 28 fixtures.
For an informal club competition you can define shorter matches - one game to 21, 15 or 11, for example - provided entrants know the format.
The trade-off is statistical as well as logistical. Shorter games:
- fit more matches;
- increase the influence of a fast start and random variation;
- make a couple of service errors more important;
- and reduce the time available for a stronger player to recover from a poor opening.
So if the event's purpose is to identify the strongest pair accurately, give matches more information. If the purpose is a sociable evening in which everybody meets everybody, shorter matches may serve the event better.
Run the event as a flow, not a set of rounds
The printed fixture may say Round 3, but courts do not finish together.
If the next legal match can start without waiting for the slow court, start it. You do not need to hold three empty courts until every Round 2 score is complete unless your presentation depends on synchronized rounds.
This is an important distinction between logical rounds and court waves.
Keep a ready queue of matches whose participants are free. As a court opens, send the next valid fixture. You preserve the round-robin opponent structure while using the venue much more efficiently.
The organiser needs a single source of truth showing:
- matches completed;
- matches ready;
- players currently on court;
- results awaiting entry;
- and any fixture deliberately delayed.
Standings and tie-breaks
Do not copy a tie-break because it sounds normal. Decide what performance you want rewarded.
A simple fixed-pair event might use:
- matches won;
- head-to-head if exactly two entrants are tied;
- points difference;
- points scored;
- a final play-off or draw if still inseparable.
But head-to-head becomes awkward in a three-way tie where A beat B, B beat C and C beat A. Define whether you calculate a mini-table among tied entrants or move directly to points difference.
Points difference also rewards continuing to maximise the score in a match that is already comfortable. That may be exactly what you want in a competitive event; in a friendly club tournament it can encourage behaviour that feels unnecessarily ruthless.
Publish the whole sequence before the first serve.
Withdrawals, no-shows and unfinished matches
Every complete round robin assumes every entrant completes the same opponent set. A withdrawal breaks that symmetry.
If someone withdraws after playing three of five matches, decide whether those three remain in the table. Keeping them gives three opponents a result the other two never had the chance to earn. Expunging them restores equal opponent sets but erases real badminton.
For a small social event, either policy can be defensible. State it in advance.
Also define:
- what score a walkover receives, if any;
- whether a late player forfeits after a deadline;
- what happens if the hall closes with a match unfinished;
- and whether an injury result counts for standings or only participation.
When the field is too large
If the full round robin does not fit, do not make every match absurdly short just to preserve the words "everyone plays everyone".
Split into groups, then advance entrants to a knockout or second-stage group.
The design questions become seeding and qualification:
- seed strong entrants across groups if you have credible prior information;
- keep group sizes as equal as possible;
- avoid comparing raw points difference across groups of different sizes unless normalised;
- decide whether runners-up qualify before the event;
- avoid rematches immediately in the first knockout round where practical.
A group stage loses the purity of every entrant facing the same field, but it often produces a far better event.
Why a weekly club night is not a round robin
An ordinary club night normally has the opposite assumptions from a round robin.
The entrant list changes. People arrive late. Courts finish asynchronously. Nobody needs a final table from tonight's opponent completeness.
What clubs often want is the spirit of a round robin - fair exposure to different partners and opponents - without the closed fixture.
That is better described as live rotation. ePegboard uses waiting, level and partnership history to choose each next game from the people actually present. It does not attempt to force a complete round robin across a population that keeps changing.
Use a round robin when completeness is part of the competition. Use a live rotation when adaptability is.
Do this calculation before anything else
N(N−1)/2 × expected match slot ÷ courts. If that number already fills the venue booking, your format has no room for long games, changeovers or human beings. Reduce the field, shorten the match or add courts before you draw.
Frequently asked questions
How many matches are in a badminton round robin?
With N entrants, each playing every other entrant once, there are N(N−1)/2 matches. Six pairs therefore create 15 matches; eight create 28; twelve create 66. This is why field size matters more than it first appears.
How many rounds does a round robin need?
With an even number of entrants and enough courts, the circle method produces N−1 logical rounds. With an odd number, add a bye and there are N rounds, with one entrant resting each round. If you have fewer courts than matches in a logical round, those rounds must be split into additional court waves.
Can doubles partners rotate in a round robin?
Yes, but that is a different scheduling problem from a fixed-pair round robin. If individuals rotate partners, you need to define what 'round robin' means: equal games, every possible partner once, balanced opponents, or an American-style individual competition. Those goals are not identical.
What tie-break should a round robin use?
There is no universal tie-break for an informal club event. Publish the sequence before play - for example wins, then head-to-head for a two-way tie, then points difference. Also define how multi-way ties and withdrawals are handled so you do not invent a rule after seeing who benefits.
What happens if someone withdraws halfway through?
Decide in advance. Common options are to retain completed matches or expunge that entrant's results so everyone is compared across the same opponent set. The latter is cleaner statistically but can erase real matches. The right choice depends on the event; the wrong choice is making it after seeing the table.
